When you think of a journalist, what image comes to your mind? Probably young girls or boys dressed in the formals conducting talk shows in television newsroom or taking interviews of the public for their TV channels or digital portals. Now don’t be shocked or surprised tomorrow if a transgender , adivasi, sugarcane cutter, tribal or any other marginalised woman comes to you to interview you for a story which is relevant and touches the hearts of the people. This is because MGM University & College of Journalism and Mass Communication Aurangabad has started a unique digital media platform named 'Bai-Manus'. This is a unique project intended to give voice to the voiceless women in the mainstream media. If you look at the dress, body language and the way these women carry themselves, you will find it difficult to believe that they are from the marginalised section of the society including farm labourers and other poor strata of society. The project is the brainchild of a journalist Prashant Pawar who is the Chief Editor of Bai-Manus the unique digital platform and Prof Rekha Shelke Dean of Social Sciences & Humanities at MGM College of Journalism and Mass Communication. Pawar says “ this unique project was initiated as in a developing state like Maharashtra, the mainstream media hardly covers the news from rural areas where millions of people live. News of the Dalits, tribals, nomadic tribes and others are hardly covered. Hence this alternative media was created to bring out the problems of these people into limelight. I was invited by the MGM University to train these people on Smartphone Journalism which is also known as Mobile Journalism. Thank you MGM for inviting me for this noble venture. The five days that I spent on training these wonderful woman was an unforgettable experience.
