How Camera Angles Make the Characters Powerful

Updated: May 22, 2023

In cinematography, the camera angle plays a crucial role in conveying the mood, perspective, and power dynamics of a scene or character. One commonly used technique is the low-angle shot, which involves positioning the camera below the eye level of the subject. When applied to a character, a low-angle shot can make them appear powerful and influential in several ways.

Shooting a character from a low angle exaggerates their height and presence on the screen. It creates the illusion that the character is looking down upon the viewer or other characters, enhancing their dominance and authority. This technique can evoke a sense of awe or intimidation, making the character seem larger than life.

To understand this, watch this video where I have patched two clips where the low-angle camera shots have been effectively used to make the character larger than life and very powerful. The first one is a clip from the iconic film Sholay which is an Indian film released in 1975, directed by Ramesh Sippy

In "Sholay," Gabbar Singh, played by Amjad Khan, is portrayed as an exceptionally powerful and ruthless villain. Observer how the low-angle camera shot makes him so fearsome and powerful.

The other is the film Baahubali" which is a highly successful Indian film franchise directed by S.S. Rajamouli. The movies feature elaborate sets, stunning visual effects, and extravagant action sequences, making them among the most expensive films made in India. Observe how the Low Camera angle is effectively used to exaggerate the influence of the main characters.
