If you were asked to shoot the powerful ENTRY of Gabbar Singh of Sholay , Mogambo of Mr India or Shahkaal ( Ajit) in Yaadon Ki Barat what camera angle would you use? Will it be High Angle Camera shot? Mid angle or Low angle? The way you keep the camera angle is very important to depict their power, influence and ruthlessness. If the camera angle is not in congruence with the depicted character then the whole efforts of the character will go waste.
Now coming back to the question what angle shot will you use to shoot their entry? If you don’t know the answer let me give you a hint. In the film Sholay ,when Amjad Khan alias Gabbar Singh makes an entry with his dialogue “KITNEY AADMI THEY” what is the first thing you see in the film. His head or the leather boots?
You are right. You see his boots first and then slowly the camera shows his whole body from low angle to top.
Thus THE LOW ANGLE SHOTS are often used to strengthen certain psychological effects in filmmaking and editing , typically to make a subject look strong or powerful. A low angle shot is any type of shot that comes from a camera angle positioned low on the vertical axis.
If you are shooting someone with your smartphone, remember this factor as the rules of cinematography are same. In my next blog I will talk about HIGH ANGLE CAMERA SHOTS.
