In the last micro lesson, we learned about the Match Cut in filmmaking. The Match cut is an editing technique in filmmaking where there is a smooth transition from one shot to the other where even though both the shots and scenes are totally different, it gives the viewers a sense of continuity.
In the last lesson, we saw the perfect match cut in the old superhit film Waqt where there is an emotive conversation between Meena ( Sadhana) and Ravi ( Sunil Dutt) at a party where they are guests.
Meena expresses her worry about their relationship while Ravi advises her to leave it to destiny as no one can predict the future. The moment, Ravi utters these prophetic words, a mellifluous song by Asha Bhosale Aage Bhi Jaane Na Tu sets the tone of their mood. It MATCHES with the conversation that they just had. Hence it is called a MATCH CUT.
Let’s take another slightly different example of a Match cut from the film Bhagam Bhag. This is a slightly different Match cut ( Inverse). Notice the conversation between Bunty ( Akshay Kumar) and Babla (Govinda) in the ending scene
Babla, Where is my Champu? ( Paresh Rawal)
Bunty (Akshay) He must be enjoying a seven-course meal in a seven-star hotel while we are starving.
As soon as Bunty finishes his sentence, the scene shows Champu getting treatment. Not at any seven-star hotel but a ‘treatment’ at the hands of his captors who are torturing him,
