The Concept of L-Cut in Film Editing

Today let us understand another important film Editing Cut in filmmaking which is known as the L Cut.

But before I define an L Cut in Film Editing, I want you to look very carefully at this small clip from the movie Lage Raho Munnabhai, a 2006 comedy movie written and directed by Rajkumar Hirani starring Sanjay Dutt as Munnabhai and Vidya Balan. It is a story about Murli Prasad Sharma aka Munna who meets Mahatma Gandhi and undergoes a heart transformation.

Watch this clip where Jhanavi (Vidya Balan), a Radio Jockey, interviews Munnabhai. Wearing a bright green dress in her studio, she delivers her opening line "Good morning, Mumbai," in her unique style. The camera focuses on her and Munnabhai sitting in front of her.

Jhanavi says “Welcome back to your favourite show. Aaj humare studio mein hain Murli Prasad Sharma”

Notice the two scenes in the video. The first scene is when Jhanavi says Good morning Mumbai and the second scene is when she says “welcome back to your favorite show…..

Observe one thing. The voice of Jhanavi from the studio scene SPILLS over to the next scene wherein you see the dhobis listening to the voice of Jhanavi emerging from the loudspeaker.

Similarly observe the next scene wherein the dialogue of Munnabhai explaining the power of Mahatma Gandhi from the studio spills over in the next scene where Cirucuit (Arsad Warsi) is shocked on hearing the unrefined words of Munnabhai.

Now let us understand the definition of an L Cut in filmmaking. The L Cut is a split editing technique, where the audio from one shot continues under the video of the next one. What the viewer experiences is hearing the audio from the previous scene while watching a video that has already cut to something else.
