This is an important concept in filmmaking. It is a composition guideline that places your subject in the left or right third of an image leaving the other two thirds more open. It helps to take excellent shots. The Rule of Third says that a visual composition is more pleasing to the eye when its compositional elements conform to an imaginary set of lines that divide the frame into equal thirds, both horizontally and vertically. To understand this concept in a very simple manner imagine that you and your friends are attending the wedding reception and are taking photograph along with the just married couple. Where will you and your friends stand in the photograph? Obviously on the sides of the couple so that the central focus is on the just married couple. The most important object of attention are the couple and not the guests. So the position of the just married couple will be at the center while all others will be on both the sides. Similarly to take any photograph you can use the technique called the Rule of Third to help you position different elements in the photo. Rule of Third is the process of placing two equally spaced vertical and horizontal lines across the photo thus creating nine squares. You can overlay the lines in your smartphone to help you place the object in relation to the subject while shooting. Though the lines will be visible for you it will not appear in the photo or video. These lines are known as grids or gridlines. (I am a television journalist and smartphone filmmaking coach.
