THESE VILLAGE WOMEN CAN MAKE SMARTPHONE FILMS!!

Updated: Nov 18, 2022

Are you really going t to village women Pratibha? Do you think they will be able to understand the technical intricacies? These two were the questions which one of the journalist colleague asked me when she came to know that I was going to Ambejogai village in Beed district of Maharashtra to teach rural women the skill of Smartphone Filmmaking. This is a place where child marriage is rampant and cases of exploitation of women are humungous. This is a place where there are cases of parents fixing the marriage of their children when they are just toddlers. The person who asked me this question is a journalist who covers Page 3 events and parties. In another words Entertainment Journalism is her main beat. Her question put me off. I didn’t like the condescending manner in which she was looking at the rural women. But what she doesn’t know about me is that I too hail from a village. I did my schooling in Phulambri and Sillod village in Aurangabad district. I can connect with the rural women better as I have spent my childhood in villages. Also what she doesn’t know is that the village women are more sharper and intelligent than the city women. This is because adversity and poverty are bigger teachers than the opulence and comfort which many of the women from the city are used to. And I am thrilled to say that women from the villages learnt smartphone filmmaking very well. Nearly 78 women participated enthusiastically to learn this art. Some of them plan to make documentaries highlighting the problems of their villages, some on the problems of child marriage and others want to become good YouTubers. Thank you Professor Arundhati Patil, Coordinator Manasvini Womens' Project for inviting me and my husband Chandran Iyer to train these women. Thank you for giving us an opportunity to give back something to the society.
