WHAT IS AN ESTABLISHING SHOT IN A MOVIE?

Look carefully at the three images in the collage . The first is the opening scene from the 1973 movie Enter the Dragon . The movie opens with a fight sequence between Bruce Lee vs Sammo Hung.

What do the audience infer from this scene ? That it is a movie on Martial Art.

In other words it ESTABLISHES in the minds of the audience that it is a martial arts movie.

The second opening scene is from the 1969 American Western movie Mackenas Gold directed by J. Lee Thompson, starring an ensemble cast featuring Gregory Peck, Omar Sharif, Telly Savalas, Ted Cassidy and others.

What does it ESTABLISH to the audience? That it is a Period film shot in some desert.

The third opening scene is from the Hindi movie Lagaan starring Amir Khan and directed by Ashutosh Gowarikar.

What do you ESTABLISH when you see the Union Jack in the opening scene?

Your guess is right. It indicates a period film when British ruled India.

An ESTABLISHING SHOT is a shot in filmmaking or television that sets up the context for the scene ahead, designed to inform the audience where the action will be taking place. It shows the relationship between people and objects, and establishes the scene’s geography.
