WHAT IS POINT OF VIEW SHOT IN CINEMATOGRAPHY?

Before I explain what is a Point of View ( POV) Shot in cinematography let me ask you a question.

Have you seen the English movie Titanic.? If yes, then what according to you is the most iconic scene in that movie ? You have guessed it right. It is the " I am flying " pose on the edge of the deck of Titanic where Jack ( Leonardo DiCaprio ) asks Rose(Kate Winslet ) to close her eyes and stretch out her arms along with him like a bird.

The camera then focuses on the face of Rose displaying her thrill, happiness and exuberance as she feels the cool sea breeze kissing her face, the gushing sound of sea waves and the golden sight of the setting sun. Why is the scene so iconic ? Because the expression on the face of Rose and the the camera angle make the viewers to experience the thrill THROUGH THE EYES OF ROSE. Now take another film Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara.

Visualise the tandem ski diving jump from 10,000 feet from the aircraft by Hritik Roshan , Farhan Akhtar and Abhay Deol. The audience can feel vicariously the thrill which the trio enjoy as the dive from the aircraft with their parachutes.

A Point of View Shot is a short film scene that shows what a CHARACTER IS LOOKING at AND IS FEELING. It is usually established by being positioned between a shot of a CHARACTER LOOKING at something, and a shot showing the CHARACTER'S REACTION.

The technique of POV SHOT is one of the foundations of film editing.
