Storyboarding is an important component of filmmaking in the preproduction stage. Good storyboarding is necessary whether you are making a full length feature film or a short film.
Let me try to explain storyboarding in very simple and non technical terms. Have you read the comic books of Phantom the Ghost who Walks , Mandrake the Magician, Denis the Menace or the Indian comic Chacha Choudhary ?
If your answer is yes, then imagine that a filmmaker has decided to make a film on the comic characters by introducing actual actors and replicating the comics scene by scene.
In the comic, if Phantom is seen riding a horse or Mandrake is seen driving a car or Denis is seen licking an ice-cream cone then for the film, and the director decides to replicate this scene similar to the visual shown in the comic, then he is using the comic book as a storyboard.
Thus a storyboard is a visual outline of a film or animation. It's an important part of the preproduction process and consists of a series of images that show everything that's going to happen in your finished piece.
A storyboard is a sketch where you tell your future story with characters and backgrounds. This set of slides helps you see the big picture of the whole story anticipated at the end. The storyboard provides an opportunity to fully prepare the rest of the crew for any video production.
If you are making a smartphone film or a documentary, making a visual outline of how you want every scene to look will make your film more creative and it will give a roadmap to go further.
